Short answer

Hybrid heat pump water heater installation in Rowlett puts an electric tank in the house that pulls heat from the surrounding air. ENERGY STAR's table for a four-person household shows $550 a year saved and a 2.7-year payback against a standard electric tank. It is estimated at $3,000 to $5,500 and needs open air, a drain and a 240-volt circuit.

01What the table says

ENERGY STAR's Savings Figures, and the Assumptions Behind Them

ENERGY STAR publishes a savings table for a four-person household replacing a standard electric tank with a certified heat pump unit. It shows 3,760 kilowatt hours saved a year, $550 a year at $0.146 a kilowatt hour, $5,610 over a 13-year life, and a 2.7-year payback on an incremental cost of $1,503. The U.S. Department of Energy says heat pump water heaters can be two to three times as efficient as electric resistance heaters, because they move heat from the surrounding air instead of generating it.

Those are good numbers, and they come with three assumptions: a family of four, a price of 14.6 cents a kilowatt hour and a heater being replaced that is an ordinary electric tank. Change any one and the answer moves. Our own estimate for the extra cost is wider, because a hybrid unit is $3,000 to $5,500 installed against $1,400 to $2,800 for a standard electric tank, a gap of $200 at its narrowest and $4,100 at its widest.

02Your own payback

Working Out Break-Even at Your Electricity Price

Oncor delivers power in Rowlett but doesn't sell it, so your price per kilowatt hour depends on the retail plan you're on. Holding ENERGY STAR's 3,760 kilowatt hours of annual saving and its $1,503 premium fixed, the payback moves like this:

Payback on a $1,503 premium, using ENERGY STAR's 3,760 kWh a year saved (our calculation)
Price per kWhSaved a yearPayback
$0.10$3764.0 years
$0.12$4513.3 years
$0.146 (ENERGY STAR)$5492.7 years
$0.18$6772.2 years

A smaller household saves fewer kilowatt hours, so scale the middle column down. A single person using half the hot water saves about half, which doubles the payback. A bigger family saves more. The point is to put your own plan's price and your own household into the same table.

03Space

How Much Room a Heat Pump Tank Really Needs

A heat pump has to breathe. Manufacturers set a minimum volume of air for the unit, in the hundreds of cubic feet, and put a clearance requirement on the intake. The volume is easy to work out: a typical one-car-wide closet, 3 feet by 3 feet with an 8-foot ceiling, holds 72 cubic feet. A 10 by 10 utility room holds 800. A 20 by 20 garage bay with an 8-foot ceiling holds 3,200.

That arithmetic is why a hybrid belongs in a garage or a roomy utility room and almost never in a closet, unless the closet is ducted. The unit also cools the air it draws from by a few degrees, which is a bonus in a July garage and a small cost in a January one, and it makes a low fan hum comparable to a dehumidifier. Check the installation manual of the model you're considering for the exact minimums, and the garage page covers what else a garage install needs.

04Rowlett's climate

What DFW's Weather Means for a Heat Pump in a Garage

29.2 daysDFW Airport averages 29.2 days a year at or below 32 degrees, and 20.2 at or above 100 (1991-2020 normals).

A Massachusetts state handout on heat pump water heaters attaches a condition to the two-to-three-times efficiency figure: the unit should sit where the air stays between 40 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. DFW Airport's 1991 to 2020 normals show how Rowlett's air compares. The average low is 38.3 degrees in December and 36.1 in January, so the coldest months sit just under the band, and the average high is 91.5 in June, 95.6 in July and 95.8 in August, so the hottest sit just over it.

A garage is usually a little warmer than the outside air in winter and a good deal hotter in July. Most units keep working outside the band, and the hybrid design switches to its electric elements when it needs to, so the saving over a year is smaller than the table's best case but still real. The 29.2 days a year at or below 32 degrees that DFW averages are the days the heat pump is most likely to lean on its elements.

Circuit, Drain and Location on the Day

Three things are checked before a hybrid is ordered. The circuit: most models want a 240-volt supply on a dedicated breaker, and the existing circuit from an old electric tank is often right. The drain: the unit collects condensation from the air it cools, as an air conditioner does, so it needs a floor drain or a condensate line to go to. The route: hybrids are taller than ordinary tanks, so the head clearance and the door or hatch it has to pass through matter.

A like-for-like electric swap takes 3 to 5 hours. A hybrid takes a little longer because of the condensate line and the clearance work. The tank is flushed and checked for an anode rod like any other, and the unit is run through its modes before we leave so you can see how it behaves.

06Costs

The $3,000 to $5,500 Range, Broken Down

The unit costs more than a standard tank, and that is most of the premium. Beyond it, the lines that change a hybrid quote are a condensate line to a drain, a new or upgraded circuit if the old one doesn't match the model, and any work needed to get the tall unit into position. A hybrid isn't an attic product: the code items for an attic, including a drain pan and a discharge route, push a quote up, and the heat pump gets little air in a hot attic.

We list each piece separately on the written quote, including the haul-away of the old tank. The cost guide explains how to read one, and the hybrid guide goes through who should and shouldn't buy.

07Hard water

A Tank Still Needs Tank Care

A hybrid still has a tank, so Rowlett's water still applies. The North Texas Municipal Water District calls its supply moderately hard, with sampled treated hardness of 122 to 160 mg/L in 2022 and 2023, which is 7.1 to 9.3 grains per gallon. Sediment settles in a hybrid tank as in any other, so the unit needs a yearly flush and its anode rod checked, and some models have an air filter to clean. The heat pump itself is sealed.

08Outages and safety

Power Cuts, Scalds and the 120-Degree Setting

A hybrid is an electric appliance, so it stops when the power does, the same as any electric tank. After Winter Storm Uri the Texas health department counted 246 deaths statewide, 22 in Dallas County, and a household that wants hot water through an outage should look at a standing-pilot gas tank. The tank in a hybrid holds a good volume of hot water in reserve, though.

Set the tank to 120 degrees, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's recommendation. At 120 an adult takes about 5 minutes to a third-degree burn, while at 140 degrees it is about 6 seconds. Heat pump mode makes the water hot slowly, so the unit's elements back it up, and the setting applies to both.

09Locally

Where Hybrids Make Sense Around Rowlett

The strongest cases are newer all-electric homes with a two-car garage. Lake Park, 2.2 miles from our shop at 5311 Boyd Boulevard in a straight line, is a development of 142 single-family homes on 35 acres at Miller Road and the George Bush Turnpike, per The Real Deal. Trails at Cottonwood Creek, 5.4 miles away, lists homes from 1,731 to 3,765 square feet. Larger houses with larger garages are where a hybrid has room.

In older streets with a gas line to the heater, a gas tank is cheaper to buy and the running-cost gap is smaller, so we usually quote both. The electric page and the gas page set out the alternatives.

Questions People Ask About This

Question not here?

Call and ask. A straight answer and an estimated range on the call, before anybody drives over.

Call (972) 472-8210
How much does hybrid heat pump water heater installation cost in Rowlett?

It is estimated at $3,000 to $5,500, against $1,400 to $2,800 for a standard electric tank. ENERGY STAR's table uses an incremental cost of $1,503. The written quote lists the unit, labor, condensate line and any circuit work separately.

How much will a heat pump water heater save me?

ENERGY STAR's table for a four-person household shows $550 a year, or 3,760 kilowatt hours, against a standard electric tank. The saving scales with your household and with your price per kilowatt hour.

How long is the payback?

ENERGY STAR shows 2.7 years at $0.146 a kWh on a $1,503 premium. At $0.10 it is about 4.0 years and at $0.18 about 2.2, using the same 3,760 kWh. A smaller household takes longer.

Does a heat pump water heater work in a Texas summer?

Yes. A heat pump works well in warm air, and DFW's normal highs of 91.5 degrees in June and 95.6 in July leave plenty of heat to draw on. It is cold air, below about 40 degrees, where it leans on its elements.

What about a cold garage in winter?

DFW's normal low is 38.3 degrees in December and 36.1 in January, just under the 40-degree edge of the range DOE-linked guidance cites. The unit switches to its elements as needed, so you keep hot water at a higher running cost on the coldest days.

How much space does it need?

Several hundred cubic feet of open air is common in the manuals. A 3 by 3 closet with an 8-foot ceiling is 72 cubic feet, a 10 by 10 utility room is 800, and a 20 by 20 garage bay is 3,200. Check the model's own minimum.

Does it need a drain?

Yes. The unit collects condensation from the air it cools, so it needs a floor drain or a condensate line. It is planned in during the fit check.

Is a heat pump water heater loud?

It makes a low fan hum, roughly like a dehumidifier. That's easy to live with in a garage and noticeable next to a bedroom wall.

Do I need a special circuit?

Most models want 240 volts on a dedicated breaker, and the circuit from an old electric tank is often suitable. Any new circuit is licensed electrical work and is a separate line on the quote.

Will it work in a power cut?

No. It is electric, so it stops with the grid. The tank keeps its hot water for many hours, but a gas tank with a standing pilot is the better outage choice.

What maintenance does a hybrid need in Rowlett's water?

A yearly flush and an anode rod check, since NTMWD's treated water measured 122 to 160 mg/L total hardness in sampled months in 2022 and 2023. Some models have an air filter that should be cleaned.

Should I choose a hybrid or a gas tank?

If gas is already piped to the heater, a gas tank costs less to install and the running-cost gap is smaller. If the house is all-electric and the garage has room and a drain, a hybrid is worth pricing. We quote both when asked.
